EARTHONE’s mission is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the key drivers that influence GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions fluxes. The project adopts an innovative interdisciplinary approach, combining advanced data-driven technologies with on-the-ground data from vulnerable regions in Southern and Mediterranean Europe.

Key Drivers

SOCIO-ECONOMIC

Understanding how economic activities shape our environment.

DEMOGRAPHIC

Analysing population dynamics and their environmental impact.

PHYSICAL

Assessing natural and physical constraints influencing GHG emissions.

Our Ambition

Leading the way to net zero GHG emissions

EARTHONE aims to reduce the gap in carbon sequestration and emissions, supporting progress toward the EU’s 2030 climate goals and 2050 carbon neutrality targets. The scalable solutions developed by the project will enhance resilience in land use and environmental management, ensuring the sustainable preservation of Europe’s natural GHG sinks while mitigating socio-economic and environmental risks.

We support European Climate Change mitigation and Land Use sustainability.

Building resilient landscapes & empowering land managers

Design, implement, and validate a multi-tier methodology to boost the resilience of vulnerable areas through integrated resource management, sustainable agriculture, and nature-based forestry. We equip land managers and landowners with the knowledge needed for better resource provision and adapt these solutions across Europe.

Harnessing data & technology for climate action

Harmonise climate, soil, and land data and develop AI-driven models to monitor and visualise GHG emissions across Europe. By combining cutting-edge sensing technologies with global and regional climate models, we deliver smart, tailored solutions for diverse stakeholders.

Empowering communities & driving sustainable growth

Boost awareness and knowledge of sustainable land use (LULUCF) at local and regional levels, promoting social and economic resilience. By turning climate challenges into business opportunities, EARTHONE supports sustainable development and foster economic transformation in vulnerable regions.

Understanding nature’s response to climate change

Study how vegetation responds to climate change—especially extreme events—by integrating satellite data, climate simulations, and ground observations. The research uncovers the intricate links between land use and climate, offering fresh insights to minimise environmental impacts.

Our Pilots

Turning innovation, resilience, and sustainability into real-world impact

Through strategically selected pilots across Croatia, Greece, Italy, North Macedonia, Slovenia, and Spain—each representing diverse land uses—the consortium will implement a risk-based methodology to tackle the challenges of global change. Soil, vegetation, and atmosphere sensors will be deployed across all pilot sites, transmitting real-time data to climate modelling partners, ensuring precise, data-driven insights to support this approach.
